In search of a good book

My new year resolution ( to read a book every month) took off really well this year – thankz khalid huessini’s Kite runner. Since then, I haven’t been able to find a book which would make me look beyond that one….I tried to read a couple of classics…but just like the way classics are – they tend to take you another time which is stimulating but can also get boring. The Victorian age was such a dull period esp. for women. So pretentious and lacking in substance…accessorizing people esp. women as if they were for a show. Emotions, feelings were not talked about, it was all about appearances. Well, it still is …but at least now we make an effort to look beyond it.
Anyway, I read…Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte , the lesser know of the Bronte sisters. While the narration is good and story lacks pace…one does not expect the life of a governess to be very exciting but at the same time, the lack of any kind of happenings in her personal life irked me. It is gloomy which might not be an undesirable trait in a book but the pace and issues covered in the book never changes…the author keeps talking about her students …and how she tried (unsuccessfully) to reform them. Anyhow, I pride myself on the fact that I read a classic and managed to improve my knowledge of the Victorian age….which in turn made me appreciate the kind of freedom we; women enjoy in this age !!
